Only Jesus Christ Is The Anointed One(1)
The letter of the anointed one appeared in the Old Testament for 29 times and in the New Testament for 1 times. The anointed one was the king of the reign in the Old Testament. After the king of Saul, the anointed one was pointed to the king of David and his descendant. In the New Testament, there is only one verse written to the anointed one that expressly refers to Jesus Christ. In fact, the descendant of King David is referred to Jesus. Only Jesus Christ is the anointed one. The title of the Jesus Messiah in Greek is the same meaning of the anointed one in Hebrew in the Old Testament.
God's anointed one in reality refers to the king of anointed in the Old Testament.
· Samuel called king of Saul the anointed one of God. Let's read the Bible:
So all the people went to Gilgal and made Saul king in the presence of the Lord . There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the Lord , and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration. (1 Samuel 11:15 NIV) Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened to everything you said to me and have set a king over you. (1 Samuel 12:1 NIV) Now you have a king as your leader. As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have been your leader from my youth until this day. (1 Samuel 12:2 NIV)Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have done any of these things, I will make it right.” (1 Samuel 12:3 NIV)
· David called the king of Saul the anointed one of God: He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord ’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord .” (1 Samuel 24:6 NIV)
· After the king of Saul, the anointed one refers to David and his descendant that is the king of Israel: “He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.” (2 Samuel 22:51 NIV)
· And when Samuel the prophet was sent by God to anoint the son of Jesse in Bethlehem, he saw Eliab and he thought that Eliab was the anointed one of God. It is not Eliab, but David. When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord ’s anointed stands here before the Lord .” (1 Samuel 16:6 NIV)
· Abishai called the king of David the anointed one of God: Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this? He cursed the Lord ’s anointed.” (2 Samuel 19:21 NIV)
From above we know God's anointed one in reality refers to the king of anointed in the Old Testament.
Now let us come to the question Is the priest and the prophet the anointed one?
There is no such statement in the Old Testament. There is also no such statement in the Bible that the people who anointed for others or anointed was the anointed one. The anointing would be to a priesthood so they would serve God as priests but the priests are not the anointed one. And the same with prophets, they are anointed, but not the anointed one. Like Samuel who is the prophet, the priest and the judge of God, but he is not the anointed one.
God established a faithful priest who shall walk before his anointed one because Eli honored his sons who scorned God's sacrifice more than God by fattening himself in the choice parts of every offering made by Israel. The faithful priest was Samuel who was a priest and a prophet walking before God's anointed one but not God's anointed one.
I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed one always. (1 Samuel 2:35 NIV)
We can see, the anointed one refers to the king of Israe in the Old Testament. There are many people anointed while there is only one the anointed one. There are many people serving before the king, while there is only one king. The priest is walking before the anointed one, but there is no such statement that the priest is the anointed one.
Thanks God, this is today's share about the anointed one in the Old Testament. Next time we continue to share The anointed one in the Old Testament actually refers to Jesus Christ in the New Testament. See you next time.
